Head of the minor opposition People’s Party, Ahn Cheol-soo, has suggested that a change of era will be possible if he is fielded as the single presidential candidate for the opposition camp.
In an interview with a local radio program on Tuesday, Ahn said he believes a change of power can occur if the main opposition party’s presidential candidate makes concessions.
His remarks suggest that if the opposition were to field a single candidate, that candidate would have to be him.
Asked whether he will continue until the end of the election, Ahn said he declared his bid to run with the aim of winning and making a better South Korea, reiterating that he’ll be the key figure in the transfer of power.
Earlier on Monday, Ahn declared his bid to run for president, launching his third attempt.
In 2012, Ahn ran as an independent but eventually withdrew, throwing in his support for Moon Jae-in, a candidate from the then opposition Democratic Party.
In 2017, he ran as a candidate of the People’s Party and finished third with 21-point-41 percent of the vote.
